The NZPA Skene Cup (6 goal) was played for in Canterbury this weekend. Winners being Christchurch team George Gould, Maddy Rankin, Jimmy Wood and Roddy Wood. Congratulations.
Port Hills Polo Club was honoured to hold the Robert Skene Cup this past weekend. Unfortunately the bad weather on Saturday cancelled the majority of the matches (only the 0 goal games were played) which meant our day 1 was eventually called off. However a stunning blue bird Sunday meant a full day of fantastic play. Christchurch Blue played Port Hills in the 0 goal final with Christchurch blue coming out on top. For the 6 goal we had 5 teams entered and with only one day of play, the winners needed the highest winning goal margin. Christchurch Teal won the subsidiary cup final, congratulations to players Charlie Wood, Josh Cork, Winston Hutchinson, Henry Batchelor.
And last but not least, a huge congratulations to Christchurch Pink winning the Skene Cup! with team members, Roddy Wood, Jimmy Wood, George Gould, Maddy Rankin. This was especially memorable for Roddy Wood who last won the cup in 1987, and to win that cup in 87 he was playing against Emmit O’Sullivan and today played against Emmits son, Matt O’Sullivan.
It was a great day of polo all round, with all teams putting on a real spectical. At the trophy presentation Roddy also spoke about Robert Skene and the history behind him as a player and what he had achieved in the sport. Great weekend for the Port Hills Polo Club many thanks to all that supported us and to the South Island polo for letting us hold the Skene Cup.
