Match Report for NZ vs Australia Ladies - Mystery Creek. Result 5-3

On Friday the 2nd of February the New Zealand Ladies team (Missy Browne, Zoe Reader, Georgie Duncan and Fern Mclldowie) played the Australian women’s team (Anna Dowling, Bianca Drake, Chloe Warren and Pip Fitzhenry) at Mystery Creek.

New Zealand came away with the victory in this tough fought Trans-Tasman match. Both teams played exceptionally well considering the weather conditions. The New Zealand team came out firing with a 3-0 lead in the first chukka, Australia fought back to a 3-3 draw. Then New Zealand came out on top 5-3 in the final chukka.

Match Report for SI NZ vs Australia - 14 goal. Result 4.5 - 12

The match started out very strong for the Australians, showing their ability to capitalise on almost every error we made. Having not played this level lately at all, our team was definitely caught off guard in the first 2 chukkas. This left us trailing 6-1.5.

After missing several close shots at goal Henry Batchelor opened our account with a field goal which lifted the spirits for our team and great supporters on the side. Despite being under huge pressure throughout the game, NZ continued to fight and score 3 more goals. 

The Australians played a very strong game and continued to score throughout the match, but NZ with the help of Sam Martin and Dean Geddes on the sidelines, showed a lot of determination and improvement throughout and managed to slow the opposition down later in the game. The end score was 12-4.5, as captain I was proud of our team’s effort and attitudes right to the last bell. With most of the players having very little experience playing at the medium goal level, this was a great opportunity for us to face such a challenge and we all felt at the end that we would love to do it all again and improve on the performance.

Thanks must go to Guy Martin and the NZPA for all the organisation involved. Thank you also to the Dormer family for hosting the game and all the generous horse lenders which helped get the Australian team on the field. Despite the result, this has been a great first exchange between the two countries which I was grateful to be involved in. We are looking forward to the next one already.
