Howard Hipwood 1950-2023


R.I.P. - Howard John Hipwood (1950 - June 6, 2023) the former HPA 9-goal handicap (1982) English international polo player considered amongst the best backs in the world.

He played in over 30 countries including Malaysia, and was captain of England for six years succeeding his brother Julian. Won the Cowdray Park Gold Cup 1990 and the Coronation Cup six times: 1979, 1982, 1983, 1990, 1993 and 1996. A member of England's 1997 winning Westchester Cup team. Howard Hipwood won numerous major tournaments in his home country and around the world. He played in the Royal Pahang Classic for HRH Tengku Muda's team, and for Royal Pahang in the UK.

A strong and dynamic player, he won four consecutive 30-goal World Cup titles at Palm Beach Polo from 1981-1984 and reached the U.S. Open finals in 1982 and 1983.
