JEANIE KELLY

Passed away 12 April 2010. We all knew Jeanie Wilson Kelly, the mother of Bryce and Jake, who was one of, especially Cambridge, and NZ's greatest polo supporters. Unfortunately her health had been deteriorating recently and she passed away peacefully at the Waikato Hospital on Monday 12 April.

Our sympathies go to Jake and Bryce and his family. Jake has done a wonderful job of looking after his mother as well as following his polo interests which include commentating.

We still know Jake's loyalty for Polo will be as strong as ever, and we will always be able to rely on him for his support!!

New Zealand Team / Played in Australia

- New Zealand versus Australia 20 goal teams sponsored by Jaguar, held at the Windsor Polo Club (approximately 1 hour west of Sydney). There was a great crowd of Aussies!

A thrilling Test was witnessed as old rivals Australia and New Zealand were not more than one goal different for the duration of the game.

- At the start of the 3rd chukka Australia was 4 - 3 but lost its lead by one goal by the start of the 4th chukka. They started the 5th chukka 6 a piece, but New Zealand edged into the lead during this chukka.

- In the 6th chukka Ruki Baillieu equalised to bring the score to 7 all. However Craig Wilson quickly answered to put New Zealand back into the lead 8 - 7.

- After a penalty Australia scored to equalise yet again but with minutes, at the Northern end of the ground, Australia lost a vital change to take the lead missing a penal opportunity.

- So with the score at 8 - 8, the 7th chukka commenced. The crowd were on their feet by this stage. New Zealand were awarded a penalty and Sam Hopkinson scored.

- Final score - New Zealand - 9
Australia - 8

The teams were - NZ - Sam Hopkinson, Craig Wilson, Kit Brooks, Guy Kirkpatrick
Aust - Jack Archibald, Dirk Gould, Matt Grimes, Ruki Bailieu

The Sinclair Hill Trophy
- At the conclusion of the match, Sinclair Hill presented the 'Sinclair Hill Trophy' - the first time it has been presented. He purchased the trophy - a delicate Argentine silver jug - on a trip there at the end of 2009. He has donated it to the NZW Polo Association and Australia Polo Council on the agreement the trophy should be played for in annual test matches 'off the stick'.

Champion Pony in the test was 'Irish' played by New Zealand Craig Wilson, and lent by John Fitzgerald. The pony judge was former 5 goaler John Gilder, a former president of NZW Polo Association 1979 - 1980.

Polo at the Royal Easter Show 1 - 5 April 2010
- Saturday 3 April international test 3 a side in the stadium, Australia versus New Zealand Australia - Glen Gilmore 7, Kelvin Johnson 5, Will Gilmore 3 New Zealand - Cody Forsyth 6, Sam Hopkinson 6, Kit Brooks 4

Llanherne Weekend March 27/28, 2010
- The weather was perfect like last year, so they managed to have 2 days of play. The last 3 years in a row. They have had fine weather all weekend, but before that they only ever played the one day due to rain.

- There were quite a few teams (9) and quite a few players playing young horses.

- They had 2 grades:
Low Goal Winners - Stephen Kay, Michael Kay, Justin Watson, Chris Jones
High Goal Winners - Limmer Lodge (Missy Browne, Tom Hunt, Andrew Parrott, Will Hunt)
7 - 6 beat Astral Farms (Allan Browne, Paul Hunt, Beau Broughton, Brett O'Callaghan)

- Limmer Lodge won after being equal at the end of 4th chukka playing an extra 30 seconds, so it was very even with a bit of friendly family rivalry. Llanherne's hospitality was once again to the fore!! A barbecue went all weekend as did the refreshments!! And was greatly enjoyed by all.

April 2 - 4 (Easter Weekend)
- Stephen Kay was having chukkas on Friday and Saturday at his place (Korakanui) and quite a few players were heading off in that direction, and no doubt will be well looked after.

The season is coming to an end soon but while the weather is good chukkas etc will continue around the Waikato, and next weekend maybe at Taupiri or Cambridge.

- There was a visiting team from Zambia and they were billeted between Kihikihi and Cambridge. On Thursday 18 March there was a game between Cambridge and Zambia. After, there was a dinner at Brownes and all were welcome and bring a plate. Brownes were very hospitable and took them fishing the day after.

- On Saturday 20 March there was a test match at the Nga Rakau ground against Zambia - Chloe Kay, Ed Kay, Hamish Ormand, Allan Browne beat (12 - 6) Zambia - Rob Pufflett, Erick Stubs, Grant Collett, Kevin Pufflett.
