South Island polo

The last polo tournament for the season was the Johnson Trophy held in conjunction with the Waipara and Amuri Polo Clubs at the Amuri grounds in Culverden.

The tournament was a family affair with nearly all of the eight teams competing having two, three or in two cases all four team-members from the same family.

Teams came from as far afield as South Canterbury and Blenheim to play over the two days.

The winners in the two grades were the only full family teams playing in the tournament.

The 4-goal winners were the team from Waireka in Sefton comprising of the Wood family of father Roddy and his three sons, Charles, James (16) and Henry (12).

The 0-goal winning team was husband and wife Bryan and Lisette Burrows and their twin sons Sam and James (17) from the Amuri club in Culverden, playing together for the first time. This is the first time a husband, wife and children have played together in the South Island. They played against the Askin family, of father and two sons from the South Canterbury club in the final. Ironically the fourth member of that team was a member of the Burrows family, in Lisette's brother Simon Broom.
