By now you will all be aware of the catastrophic consequences of Equine Influenza (EI) being brought into New Zealand. Apart from the substantial loss that all participants and sporting bodies involved in equine sports will suffer it will completely wipe out your polo season for this year. All horses will be grounded and confined to the property they are on when the outbreak is notified.

EI is a highly contagious virus which is not only spread from horse to horse but also by people who have had contact, even momentarily with an infected horse or a carrier. As all horse movements into NZ have been halted until further notice and at the last report from MAF those that have come into NZ over the past few months are clear, if it comes to NZ it will be brought here by humans or their gear.

In an earnest endeavour to avoid this occurring through the polo fraternity, NZPA at its AGM on Thursday 4th October agreed to adopt the rules of the NZ Racing Authority and are asking players to adhere to them without exception.

The Rules are as follows:

1. Any player or groom who has played or ridden or worked horses overseas, with particular emphasis on Australia, and who intends to work within the New Zealand Polo Scene is NOT PERMITTED to bring any gear into New Zealand.

2. ALL GEAR to be used by a rider/groom coming from overseas (including but not limited to gear bags, whips, boots, helmets, body protectors, saddles and attachments and packing) MUST have been PURCHASED AFTER ARRIVAL IN NEW ZEALAND. NO GEAR is permitted to be brought into New Zealand from Overseas.

3. In the event that a player/groom is coming into NZ and has had contact with horses or gear or other horse persons prior to his/her departure, that individual should spend 3 days in a non horse environment before moving to his/her final destination. In that time all clothes that could have been exposed to horses should be thoroughly washed in a strong detergent.

4. The player/groom will only be permitted to ride after assurance and confirmation that he/she has abided with these conditions.
