NZ Colts on tour in UK
July 2006
pictures and story by Hannah Butcher
The first test match against the English U19 team was held at Cirencester, a
beautiful sunny day was appreciated by everyone.
The New Zealand lineup was
- Guy Higginson
- Tom Hunt
- Sam Hunt
- Matt Bayley
The opposing team for England comprised
- Ollie Cudmore
- Matt Cudmore
- Richard LePoer
- Rob Wilson
New Zealand was given a half-goal start due to hanidcap, however England got serious early on in the first chukka Richard Le Poer, very well mounted, cruised through the NZ boys with 2 early goals. NZ defended well but not good enough.
In response, early on in the 2nd chukka Guy Higginson and Matt Bayley
changed positions, Guy did well defending hard at the back. The Hunt boys,
again as ever showing so much heart you could see exactly why they were the
obvious choice for the squad.
England came back with another 2 goals in the 2nd chukka, but by the 3rd NZ
were far from demoralized.
Matt Bayley came back with a ferocious goal, stolen from the grasp of
LePoer, Matt ran it in from 60 yards, much appreciated by the support crew
behind the goal.
NZ tried valiantly to clamber back, and soon had the score line at 5-3 1/2.
The extreme hors power of the Cudmores and LePoer boys sadly beat our boys
in the last chukka, which left the final score at 7- 3 1/2.
The score did not represent the game which was a hard contest between some
very talented young men.
NZ play the English team again on Friday, July 21, a few tweaks here and there, and I am sure NZ will make amends.
