Lenny Kay - Kihikihi A v Waimai
The Kihikihi senior team came up against the in-form Waimai team in the Northern Provincial (NPA) championships in Auckland over the weekend. Waimai had won last week's New Zealand Open and with a slight change to their lineup were still riding high. However, Kihikihi had a very solid team with the two strong five-goalers Robert Watson and Andrew Parrot anchoring the team. Waimai had a one-goal lead on handicap in the first chukka but that's where it stopped as Kihikihi decided to go hard from the start and got ahead of Waimai with a 5 to 1 lead after the first.
Waimai never recovered from the Kihikihi pressure and Kihikihi finished the victors 11-5 over their old foe. Paul Kay, in his traditional and very effective No.1 position tormented Waimai, with Robert and Andrew playing superbly in the centres. Lenny Kay stepped back up to the higher goal game without missing a stride and snuffed out a lot of Waimai's attacks from the back position. Kihikihi went on to take the Cameron Cup, one of polo's most sought-after prizes.
In another show of form, Kihikihi's other two teams over the weekend also made their respective finals which is very promising for next week's Savile Cup.
Of the last 20 winning Savile Cup teams, 16 have been from the NPA region. Winning the NPA also shows which clubs are in the best form leading up to the Savile, which is being hosted by Kihikihi starting next week (March 7).
The Savile Cup is New Zealand's oldest sports team trophy and is polo's national club championships. More than 500 horses and many enthusiasts will descend upon the region for the savile Tournament, which concludes on Sunday, March 12.
