Savile Cup

SAVILE CUP TOURNAMENT 2005

8 – 13 March 2005

Auckland Polo Club

Is a 14-goal Savile a good thing or not? This year South Africa have reduced their national club championships to 14 goals for the same reason as New Zealand: it includes more clubs, becomes more competitive and gives an opportunity to lesser club players. The winning team may not be the highest rated Club side in the country, but the team will have earned their victory after a week of hard and competitive polo.

The Auckland Club is excited about running the Bayleys Savile, and although it is only three weeks after the Morton Estate High Goal Open, the Club and Clevedon will be ready to host a really good week of polo.

Bayleys

New Zealand Polo welcomed Bayleys as the major sponsor for New Zealand Polo last year and is pleased that they are continuing their support.

Bayleys' Country division was established in 1999 to provide a new level of professionalism, marketing expertise and commitment to owners of country property, ranging from large stations through to lifestyle blocks and lodges.

Our Country division encompasses pastoral, horticultural, viticulture and lifestyle property marketing. Bayleys has a specialist team focusing on this market with a view to maximising national and international interest in country and lifestyle properties.

Bayleys Country has built up an extensive database of prospective purchasers both within New Zealand and overseas for all categories of the country market. Our high-quality Country magazine showcases top country properties in a full-colour, editorial style environment. This Internet site is also an important component of Bayleys marketing, particularly for introducing overseas-based parties to New Zealand property offerings.

Bayleys has close to 48 offices located throughout New Zealand from Southland to Northland with rural and lifestyle specialists working in these areas and a strong referral network operating around the country. Our Country specialists are trained to achieve the best possible price for our clients' properties in all price ranges.

They are backed by the biggest real estate support team in the country including New Zealand's largest in-house property marketing department, a media relations unit, specialist auctioneers, finance brokers, a team of research analysts and a training department.

Grazing

We appreciate that quite a few players have friends or contacts and make their own arrangements for grazing. For those who haven’t please contact Martyn Forsyth (phone 09-2928858). However, don’t leave it to the last minute. Marty will only arrange grazing for those who phone and ask him, so please don’t just arrive and phone from the grounds to find out where ‘your paddocks are’. If you haven’t phoned or contacted him in advance, Marty will assume you have made your own arrangements.

Reminder on conditions of entry

Teams for Savile and Riddiford & Levin sections

3 players must be club members, declarations lodged, and on Diane Brown’s list for that club. Those three must also be NZ citizens or hold New Zealand passports. Any player who is not a NZ citizen but thinks he should play as a New Zealander must apply to NZ Polo before the entries close

If the fourth member of the team is a current playing member of another club and on that club’s list at 31 January, written permission must be gained from both the club to which that player belongs, and the club for which he intends playing for at the Savile tournament, before the entry can be accepted. If he is not a current playing member, a Declaration form must be lodged with NZ Polo before he plays. (NZ rules By-Law 4.14(vi). The previous rule of foreigners being in the country by a certain date no longer applies.

In the Savile Cup, there can be only one 7 goal player in each team, and a player with minus handicap cannot play in the Savile section.

The Riddiford & Levin 4 goal section is restricted to 3 goal players and below.

The Mackenzie section is for 0 goal teams, 4 chukkas, run on handicap and limited to 2 goal players and below. It will be not be restricted just to club teams and the residency rules do not apply although all players must have signed a declaration. This section will be organised by the Auckland Polo Club not NZ Polo.

No player may play in more than one section of the tournament.

Entries close on Wednesday 23 February for all sections and must be made through the Club secretary.

The Draw

The draw will be sent to all clubs and team managers. Team managers are responsible for ensuring the players in their team fulfil any scheduled duties as well as knowing when they play. The draw will also be on the www.polo.org.nz</B>, but please ensure that you check the answerphone, because grounds or times or even the draw can get changed. Answerphone: (09) 2928 391

Presentation.

Please note that By Law 4 (14k) will be enforced. Prizewinners may only be absent from the presentation with special permission from the President.

Catering

Last time Auckland held the Savile we had a fantastic caterer lined up to provide all sorts of goodies during the day. When the first day was cancelled, it was too much for the caterer who cancelled his service for the week. A lesson for us – and no food during the Savile. We have a new caterer who will be catering during the Open. Provided everyone is happy, she will be there for the Savile too (if not we move to contingency plan A). She has a great menu and will be available for dinner as well as during the day. There will be a food service to all grounds..

Sideline Carparks

Both single carparks, and three-car areas will be available. Contact Auckland secretary Paddy Lozell phone 09 2334144, 0274988000, paddy-aucklandpolo@xtra.co.nz

surroundings. Music: jukebox after 9.30pm

Wednesday Club Bar Open

Thursday Club Bar Open

Friday Breakfast at the Interim Meeting. 7.30am

Wine Tour

Dinner Game dinner Sit-down dinner on the sideline.

Dress: Smart casual. Cost: $40.00 per head. Booking essential before Friday midday, through Paddy Lozell or the Bar during the week

Saturday Smart Barbeque. Max. $10 per head

NZ Polo Interim Meeting: Thursday 8.00am at the Clubhouse

The Interim Meeting of NZ Polo is a general meeting open to all players and members. Each club should ensure they have a nominated delegate to attend.

Admittedly occasionally the meeting has been deadly boring. This one will be better. Breakfast will be served from 7.30am and the meeting starts at 8.00am, coffee in hand.

This is the opportunity for players to air ideas and grievances. Should the Savile be 14 goals next year? Should umpires be qualified? How successful are coaching sessions? Should there be a levy on horses exported? Who knows what will be discussed? Make sure you are there.
